The setup

Landing Zone's De_Airport Masters gets underway today at Thon Hotel Oslo Airport in Gardermoen, Norway. Fourteen teams, four groups, two days of games, $8,000 on the line.

The venue is exactly what it sounds like: an airport hotel. Teams flying in from across Europe skip the city transfer — practical, if not glamorous. The setup and branding look sharp. Clean staging, solid production value, as you can see in the cover image above. Excited to see how the stream goes tomorrow.

Format

Four groups, all Round Robin BO1. Top three from each group advance. Group winners earn a direct pass to the semifinals; second and third-place finishers play a knockout BO3 for the remaining spots. After that: semis, a third-place decider, and the Grand Final — all BO3.

Day 1 (February 20) runs all the group matches. Day 2 (February 21) has the knockouts and bracket.

The groups

Group A: Metizport, Lilmix, Infurity

Three teams, so all three advance. This is essentially Metizport's warm-up block — they should go 2-0 without breaking a sweat. For Lilmix and Infurity, two guaranteed matches before the knockout stage is a bonus, but they'll need to figure out their CS before facing real competition.

Group B: Fingers Crossed, Acend Club, Gamle Venner, Insidious

The morning's most competitive pool. Fingers Crossed are the top seed but Acend Club are close enough to push them. Their head-to-head at 11:00 local decides who tops the group and who has to play a knockout BO3. Gamle Venner are the dark horse. Insidious, entering at 14th seed, will need an upset to avoid an early exit.

Group C: AaB esport, SemperFi, TICKET TO NORWAY, Young Ninjas

The headline pool. AaB vs SemperFi at 16:00 local is the best match of the group stage. Nine of the fourteen teams carry world rankings into this event. Metizport (#79) and Phantom (#80) lead the field; AaB sit at 95, SemperFi at 103. So this match is effectively third vs fourth by ranking — two sides who know exactly where they stand relative to each other, which tends to make for a proper game. TICKET TO NORWAY and Young Ninjas are fighting for third place and one more series on Day 2.

TICKET TO NORWAY, seeded 12th at a tournament held in Norway, is either a fun coincidence or very deliberate. Probably both.

Group D: Phantom Esports, BOSS, ReThink

Three teams, all three advance. Phantom are the second overall seed and should handle their group. In BO1, though, both BOSS and ReThink have a shot to make it awkward.
